"Köln

There have been several things that have changed since I last wrote about moving to Germany. The biggest change so far is that the car is unable to ship to Germany. I was really hoping to take it because we could put a lot of our stuff in there and I really like the car. I know we won’t be able to buy a car that nice in Germany, with only one of us having a job. Christian has been discussing the car scenario with his parents and, I guess, they have been trying to help him find a car before we arrive. This topic has been the subject of a couple arguments already, since I’m kind of a brat when it comes to cars. I’ve always been super picky about my choice. It’s still kind of hard to come to terms with the idea of leaving behind a loaded BMW to end up in something like a Ford Focus or VW Golf…or even far worse an Opel (not meant to be an insult on those who own and like these cars, as I previously said I’m a fan of most German cars). I’m cheering for the Golf but I have a feeling that it’s a long shot. I couldn’t resist a reference to these two faces below.

""

Photo from LA Times and caption added by me.

We recently discovered this at our last dealership visit. We knew that we needed a release of lien for the car but when we bought the car, BMW of Ann Arbor made it sound like it wasn’t a big deal when we discussed wanting to take the vehicle to Germany. All they honestly cared about was selling another overpriced car on their lot. I hate to point a finger at anyone but, in retrospect, we kind of fell into this whole situation by trusting their sales team.

In May 2013, I had an older BMW that was having a lot of problems but was out of warranty. I was sick of paying over $5,000 every couple of months just to have the car fixed. I only owed around $8,000 on the car at the time. We complained about the quality of the vehicle and they offered to show us some of the newer cars. They guaranteed that we would not have the issues that we had and that the warranty would cover anything that does break. We had the car for one week before we had to take it back for a noise coming from the transmission. In September, we brought it in for 5 issues on it, they gave me a rental for 2 weeks and in the end, nothing was fixed. A couple weeks ago, a module failed and it caused nearly everything on the vehicle to go out. We had to have it towed in and request the service director to review our list of 28 issues! He had to make the joke about a $5,000 repair being nothing and that he had a car in there with a $30,000 repair bill on it. That didn’t make us happy either. At least the car got fixed this time, in about a week and a half. Overall, it hasn’t been an excellent experience but I still love that car. We probably won’t buy another one though.

Unfortunately, the old BMW that I had would have been easier to ship to Germany because the loan would’ve been paid off by now so we wouldn’t have needed the release of lien. On top of that, the car was of lesser value and the 20% taxes on the total vehicle value, upon arriving in Germany, would have been more manageable.

So you’re probably wondering what this all has to do with anything. Well, without taking the car, we can’t pack it full of stuff to bring with us. We now have additional things to add to our to do lists, like find a way to ship the stuff through mail. We recently found out that it will cost about $350 to ship a box of 50 pounds and we will probably need two. To ship stuff internationally like that, we have to take pictures of everything, list these items on the box and provide an estimated value for each item. In addition, we now have a $600 a month lawn decoration, not including insurance. Actually, we may have to consider putting it in storage, while we are gone. Christian just threw another shocker at me today. He thinks we should make a push to sell the BMW. I don’t really want to and it makes me sad but that is a lot of money to pay towards something we can’t use. Sadly, I have a feeling that there will be a for sale ad up on it, whether I like it or not.

We also learned another interesting fact today that could have an impact on his job in Germany. He was supposed to maintain his current position but work remotely in Germany. His supervisor, who had agreed to let him work in Germany, told everyone she will be leaving. This idea may now be up in the air. I’m almost positive he will have a job in Germany, even if we have to move to someplace other than Köln. I will go there, most likely, without a job. I received confirmation that my interview with Bosch didn’t work out. That probably wasn’t the right position for me anyway.

We have begun to move some of Christian’s stuff into my parents house. That’s a little progress. I started to pack some of my clothes into my bags and sort out the books I want to take. Unfortunately, the stack of books is 35 pounds so I have to reduce. My clothes don’t come anywhere remotely close to fitting in the biggest piece of luggage I have. Everything I packed in there has to be moved to Christian’s huge bag. I will probably fill his bag and most of my other bag full of just clothes. It makes it stressful because if you are going to mail stuff, you want to make sure that it is stuff that can be replaced. I absolutely will not ship stuff like clothes, makeup or jewellery in those boxes. I’m hoping to just ship books and other small things.

"The

The current packing attempt (fail).

Another big change has been the cat. My cat will now be carried on with me into the plane, rather than stored in cargo. That makes me feel a lot better, however, it creates some additional stress. I will no longer be able to bring a carry on bag with me, filled with emergency stuff, jewellery, laptop and camera equipment. This means that Christian will have to carry on most of this stuff, plus his own. I am also stressed about the cat. I hope he doesn’t make the person next to me, in the plane, hate me by doing anything bad. I’m also terrified that I will get to the airport and they will tell me that I can’t carry him on for whatever reason. I don’t know what I will do if something like that happens. I need to get off my butt and make his last vet appointment though. I still need to get his certification and passport or he won’t be going at all.

Overall, there is a lot going on. The stress of the move is building as the days go by. Each of us has had a couple emotional outbursts towards the other. Our weekends have been pretty boring because we spend them on our computers doing stuff to prepare to move. These sort of things build some stress between us because it sometimes feels like you’re sitting there alone with your computer, rather than spending quality time with each other. You have that whole excitement about seeing the other person but when they get there, you’re doing the same thing you were doing when you were alone and that excitement that you had quickly changes to disappointment. I’m sure there will be plenty more emotional ups and downs as everything progresses. I believe if we can make it through the next 18 days, without killing each other, then we can handle just about anything that comes our way. I hope to be almost completely packed before the one week till departure day because I do not want to do what Christian did before he came here. He had 5 hours until he had to leave for the airport and he didn’t have anything in his luggage. I don’t think I have the composure to maintain sane for something like that.
